Hello!
How’s everyone been? Q1 (lol) seemed like it hit everyone like a ton of bricks (myself included), but it seems like things are on the up and up? The universe works in mysterious ways, and I’m feeling quite optimistic and generally excited (my preferred state of existence).
Some personal highs (not that you asked):
Trivia was a huge success IMO
I started a (new) job! (side note: thank you to everyone who sent a job listing/checked in. So so appreciative of your help/kindness)
Incredible, humidity free weather (for now)
The most wholesome and love-filled visit from my grandma last weekend
Sinners + Pride & Prejudice
Picnics in the park
Heading to Italy during Conclave (2024) season (a fun coincidence!)
Because of said new job starting, I am way behind on all my personal/side projects (hence this late newsletter!), so I’m going to keep this one short and sweet!
See you at the movies,
Abbie
An exciting event for the May screening (please read carefully!!)
Let’s face it, movies have been SLOW (except for Sinners and Pride & Prejudice, as stated lovingly above). Luckily, DC is a magical place full of lots of culture and a variety of events. So, I’m very excited about the May event, which blends film (duh), live theater, and local businesses (three of my fav things!).
Here’s the deal:
What: “Akira Kurosawa Explains His Movies and Yogurt (with live & active cultures!)”
When: Thursday, May 29. Happy hour 7pm, show 8pm (first 10 people to show get a free drink!)
Cost: $30 with group ticket (45% off! I think, I’m bad at math and too lazy to calculate.)
Why: Movies are slow, Kurosawa is cool, and trying new things is important, okay?
If you are interested, please, fill out this RSVP form to secure your spot. Woolly Mammoth is offering us highly discounted group tickets so that we can all sit together. Please RSVP before May 22 if you intend to sit with the group/want the HUGE discount!
About the show:
Thank you to DCMC member Will for sharing this super cool event with me! I’m very excited to check it out, and I hope you’ll join me :).

Trivia (recap)
Thanks to everyone for coming out to trivia the other night. For it being the first time, I think it went pretty great! So again, thank you to everyone who showed up, to Swati and Malavika for hosting, and to everyone who provided feedback (I heard you loud and clear - more space, shorter runtime).
Trivia will alternate months with the usual discussion and will return in June! But if you’re still craving movie trivia in the interim, Tryst hosts twice a month!
If you’re interested in hosting trivia in the future, fill out this form!

Letterboxd profile spotlight
“Hi! Name is Ian and Music and Movies are my passion. Going to the movies, collecting dvd’s going to Blockbuster was instilled in me young from my Mom and its only gotten stronger since moving to DC! The movie club has helped me find a community of film heads and its been great”
Q&A — What is your…
Letterboxd handle: Ianjudge
Top 4 favorites (and why): Akira, Napoleon Dynamite, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Love & Basketball (4th changes all the time). The thing about all these films is that they made me realize a side of myself i didn’t think I had at the time. Most of these I watched in my younger teenage years, so they formed my humor (Napoleon Dynamite), emotional intelligence (Love & Basketball and Eternal Sunshine) and flat out imagination (Akira)
Hot film take: Reclining chairs in theaters are a bit overrated - i’m not trying to nap, i’m trying to FOCUS on the film!
Lowest rated movie: You People - a movie with Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill shouldn’t be that boring
Most watched movie: Spongebob Squarepants Movie 🤠
Favorite director: Used to be a toss up of Wes Anderson & Hayao Miyazaki , Ryan Coogler is moving up quickly though!
“So bad, it’s good” movie: The Room!!
Most recommended movie: Howl’s Moving Castle! Has something for everyone. A movie about self-acceptance and deep love shown in a way that many others did not at the time. I also feel as Anime doesn’t always get love from film-heads even though its influence is STRONG in western media.
Most anticipated movie: Materialists and the new Paul Thomas Anderson film!
